Blessed Winter Solstice! Early this morning, I bundled up in my coat and headed into the backyard for a ritual underneath my favorite oak tree.
With frozen fingertips and the early morning sun streaming through the trees, I felt the magic of the shortest, darkest day of the year—and the promise of renewal that it brings.
I closed my eyes, turned my face to the sun, pressed my palms into the earth, and felt the spirits of the land stirring around me—asleep, perhaps, but never gone.
I called out to my ancestors, the spirits of the land, the divine powers, and the mighty Sun—the giver of all life. I spoke heartfelt words of gratitude for their guidance and protection, and placed offerings at the base of the oak tree.
“As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul…”
As the light and warmth returns to our hemisphere, may the fire within our hearts also be restored.
After my Saturnalia and Winter Solstice rituals and celebrations, I am ready to lean into one of the key themes of the winter season: REST.
Inspired by the rythms of the natural world around me, over the course of the next few weeks I will slow down, embrace stillness, focus my attention inwards, and shrug off my impulses to do and be more, more, more.
Capricorn season will still be waiting for us after the holidays are over 😉
For now, I seek to honor and mirror the stillness and quiescence of winter.
