On Monday December 21st, 2020—the Winter Solstice, the shortest and darkest day of the year—the Great Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter in the sign of Aquarius occurred.
This is a lot to unpack.
If you are active in the pagan, witchcraft, astrology or spiritual communities, you have no doubt seen countless posts about this Great Conjunction.
And if you are a human with access to the Internet or TV, you have no doubt heard about the shocking and disgraceful events that took place here in the United States yesterday, January 6th, 2021.
To summarize, anarchists stormed the U.S. Capitol building in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election results. It was a blatant attack on truth, freedom, and justice.
I believe these two events—the Great Conjunction and the riots at the Capitol—may be deeply connected. Below, I will explain why.
During the 2020 election, Joe Biden received 7 million more votes than Donald Trump, readily winning the popular vote. He also received 306 Electoral College votes compared to Trump’s 232.
In spite of these compelling numbers, Trump has maintained allegations of voter fraud and a “stolen” election process. He and his allies filed 62 lawsuits in state and federal courts seeking to overturn election results, ultimately losing 61 of those lawsuits due to lack of evidence.
Even so, Trump has repeatedly cited claims of his “landslide victory” and encouraged his supporters to carry on the fight against “fraudulent” election results.
Yesterday, we saw the brutal impact of Trump’s words. Rioters at the Capitol Building climbed walls, smashed windows, entered government offices and meeting rooms. They vandalized and looted government property, threatened police and security officers, caused fear and chaos.
This was a domestic terrorism attack, and President Trump responded with this statement hours into the event:
“This was a fraudulent election, but we can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home. We love you. You’re very special. You’ve seen what happens. You see the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel. But go home and go home in peace.”
Following this mind-boggling response, we all witnessed a dramatic shift in the words and actions of long-time Trump allies. Last night, Democrats and Republicans gathered to condemn the acts violence and anti-patriotism that occurred yesterday.
Together, they also condemned Trump’s role in inciting this attack on the Capitol, and together they certified Biden as the 46th President of the United States.
So, what do these events have to do with the Great Conjunction / Great Awakening?
First, “Great Awakening” is a phrase that is not well-defined and can have different uses in different circles. For our purposes, let’s consider Great Awakening to mean a large-scale spiritual awakening or collective shift in consciousness.
A Great Awakening is not something that happens to an individual, but rather something that happens to an entire population. When a true Great Awakening occurs, we as humans will deepen our understanding of our true, divine purpose for being on this Earth on a massive scale.
Second, “Great Conjunction” refers to a conjunction of the planets Saturn and Jupiter in the sky. It is not inherently linked with any sort of Great Awakening—but it could be, and in this case I believe it is.
Why?
A Great Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter is not an exceedingly rare event, as it occurs every 20 years. However, since ancient times it has been considered a major astrological event that has been linked with shifts in power and the beginnings of new eras.
Additionally, these two planets have been aligning in Earth signs for the last 200 years. The 2020 Great Conjunction marked a new cycle of Saturn and Jupiter meeting in Air signs for the next 200 years. This shift is known as a Great Mutation, and the last Great Mutation from Earth to Air occurred in 1225 AD.
We are not talking about a sudden overnight transformation. We are not talking about a 1-year transformation, or even a 10-year transformation. We are talking about a new 200-year cycle. None of us will be around to see the final results, but we are all here to see the beginning.
And we are seeing it now.
Themes of the Great Conjunction in Aquarius
In astrology, Saturn represents restriction, limitation, boundaries, discipline, and karma. Indeed, Saturn is said to reward those who have fulfilled their duties and derail those who are not on the right path—sometimes in harsh and destructive ways.
By comparison, Jupiter represents growth, healing, and good fortune. As Jupiter and Saturn travel through Aquarius together, many astrologers feel that there will be a battle between these two planets: one will trigger restrictions and contractions, and the other will spur growth and expansions.
Yet they are both leading us to the same end goal: a major paradigm shift. Saturn restricts that which needs to be restricted, and Jupiter expands that which needs to be expanded. Both are needed for progress.
In Ancient Rome, Saturn was an agricultural god and the Ruler of the Golden Age, a mythological time of perfect peace. He taught the people how to work hard, save the fruits of their labor, and share their riches with those in need. This brought an end to poverty, hunger, and suffering.
Interestingly, the Roman god Saturn is also linked with the Winter Solstice. The ancient pagan festival Saturnalia was a celebration of Saturn’s bounty: prosperity and peace as a reward for hard work and discipline.
Much as the Winter Solstice represents the return of the light to the world, Saturnalia represents a return of Saturn’s Golden Age. An auspicious time for the Great Mutation to occur!
Now, let’s talk about the sign of Aquarius. In modern astrology, this sign is ruled by Uranus (though traditionally it was ruled by Saturn) and is associated with themes such as freedom, innovation, idealism, humanitarianism, rebellion, and technology.
What a sign for Saturn and Jupiter to meet in! Especially at the tail-end of a year like 2020.
This is why many astrologers and spiritualists believe the Great Conjunction of 2020 marked the start of a new Great Awakening. Collectively, we will shed a 200-year-old pattern and shift into new ways of thinking.
We will outgrow those old, rigid, restrictive ways of doing things and usher in a new era of revolution. Equality, social justice, and human rights will be at the forefront of these changes.
To be clear, I am speaking about antiracism, gender equality, LGBTQA rights, socialism, environmentalism.
As a result of this Great Awakening, we will better understand that we are all connected, and that we all have a responsibility to help one another—just as we did in Saturn’s Golden Age. Advancements in technology and medicine will fuel these paradigm shifts.
The Aquarian themes mentioned above will be at the forefront of these changes until 2023, when Saturn moves into the next sign. But the shift in collective consciousness will continue long after that, for the duration of the 200-year cycle.
Revolution > Resistance
Of course, the Great Mutation from Earth to Air will not come without resistance—and we witnessed that resistance yesterday.
The people who rioted and looted the Capitol are clinging desperately to those old, rigid, restrictive ways that we are being asked to leave behind. They do not want to usher in a new era of innovation and humanitarianism. They hold so much fear, and that fear breeds hate and destruction.
But yesterday we also witnessed a number of individuals breaking free from that resistance.
Republican representatives—including those who have been Trump loyalists from the start—have publicly denounced the riots, publicly denounced the baseless claims of election fraud, publicly denounced Donald Trump’s words and actions.
These individuals have called for peace, for progress, for unity. They have begun the process of breaking free from the old, rigid, restrictive paradigms that they publicly supported just weeks ago. And now, they ask us all to move forward together.
To quote Vice President Mike Pence:
“To those who wreaked havoc in our Capitol today, You did not win. Violence never wins. Freedom wins.”
The ways of corruption and hate are cracking and crumbling from the inside out.
My prediction? Between now and 2023, we will witness much more of this behavior: more of people breaking free, more of people coming together, more of people changing their ways, more of people embracing progress, more of people fighting for the collective good.
The Great Awakening: A New Era Awaits
On my “About” page, I have written the following:
“Yes, I believe that all humans are inherently magical and spiritual begins. I believe that we all have the power to tap into the energies of the universe and connect with them if we so choose, because we are as much a part of the universe as the ocean, the mountains, and the forests are part of it.”
I want to be very clear: when I say “all humans,” I mean all humans.
I mean Donald Trump. I mean the domestic terrorists who attacked the Capitol. I mean the vocal minority of people who have cheered on those terrorists from behind their keyboards.
These are souls existing in a human body, having a human experience. They are connected to the Divine (or the Universe, or God, or whichever term you use) because they are the Divine.
They are lost, they are afraid, they are angry, they are dangerous, and they are a real and serious threat to the rest of us. They have caused immense harm and must face the consequences of their actions.
And they will. I have no doubt that they will—if not in this lifetime or form of existence, then another.
I hope those individuals learn the lessons that they need to learn in order to break free from the cycle of suffering. I hope they join the side of light; a change of heart does not erase past damage, but I would still welcome them gladly.
However, their fate is not my concern, because it is not within my control.
What is within my control is this: I will champion truth. I will champion justice. I will champion a new era of humanitarianism, compassion, enlightened thinking, and social progress.
I will champion healing.
Watching the events unfold yesterday, I felt disheartened beyond words. I felt sick to my stomach. I felt immense grief and rage. Today and every day moving forward, I will hold space for those feelings because they are valid and natural.
They are the fuel that will propel me—and you, and all of us—into the next era.
