The Uragh Stone Circle is perhaps the most mystical place I have ever visited.
Nestled within the rugged landscape of the Beara Peninsula, Uragh Stone Circle sits on a hill overlooking Lough Inchiquin, surrounded by mountains with waterfalls thundering down their rock faces.
Constructed at an unknown date during the Bronze Age (3300–1200 BCE), this ancient site consists of five smaller stones of roughly the same height (two portal stones, two side stones and the axial stone), plus one large standing stone that towers over the others.
Though I have now visited a number of ancient stone circles here in Ireland, none have drawn me in the way that Uragh did.
Sitting within this ancient ring of stones, gazing out at the wild landscape surrounding me, I felt the heartbeat of the past — not just all around me, but within me.
I felt the spirits of this land, the ancestors of place who called this region home, and the energy of this sacred ritual site — reverberating through time, eternally alive within this ancient circle of stones.
As I placed an offering as the base of one of the stones and sat in quiet meditation, I experienced a flood of emotions and imagery.
I feel so grateful for and inspired by the local people who have preserved and cared for these sacred sites for generations, so that they may be visited and experienced by all of us today.
I know this will not be my last visit to Uragh Stone Circle; I am already dreaming of my return…
